Adobe is going to scrap their hard copies (disks) for their software (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Flash), and have you pay a subscription for the latest software called the Adobe Creative Cloud. $50 per month. Could you really afford such an expense in the long run?

This is really disturbing. Please hear what he has to say, it really is a serious situation for working artists. Pass this along so others may know about the Adobe Creative Cloud and how horrible it is.

Yep… Just went to see how much Flash costs. You know, to just buy the program? Guess what? After spending a while looking, it appears that you CAN’T anymore. You have to pay an outrageous subscription fee. I hate adobe. Is there a petition going around to stop this nonsense? Because I want to sign it.

Today I just signed the petition in the voice against the Adobe Creative Cloud. For those who are not familiar with what the new Creative Cloud can do to you as an artist, I really suggest you watch this video.

For those who have seen, reblogged, faved, here’s the link (as shown in the previous reblog) to sign the petition. Anything can happen, Adobe really needs to know that many artists are not supportive of them controlling not just the software..but the content worked on the Cloud.

Character Design is using Pinterest, an online pinboard to collect and share what inspires you.

While these are pretty cool, 95% of it can be achieved with just lots and lots of drawing from life and/or photos. The stuff at the link can help you figure out ways of seeing things or a few stylistic shortcuts, but it can’t replace the sheer value of drawing real stuff.

the fun thing about basing characters off of music by composers who very often write upbeat, happy songs is that these characters by necessity develop backstories and nuances that completely contradict the upbeat nature of the music they’re based off of and you’re (read: i’m) left standing confused like “why did you become sad”

this is especially disconcerting when the character in question is supposed to be happiness incarnate due to the overwhelming upbeat nature of his associated composer’s work

leave all the darkness to jun her associated composer wrote ripple star catacombs ffs

I don’t think it’s necessary that a person with terrible things in their past will become unhappy. People are often happy or unhappy in spite of their circumstances. It depends a lot more on the individual’s philosophy and mental healthiness than on their past.

And, of course, an author always has control over the characters.

This tutorial is incredible if you are a character designer looking to diversify your female characters. Adding weight to a character is not as simple as drawing a simple body and curving the lines; you have to know the body structure to get it right.

I tried the second character from the left “Gwen” and was shocked at how close my sketch came to this tutorial.

We’ve all seen the theories, repeated and twisted ad nauseum to fit nearly every children’s show. Angelica dreamed up the other Rugrats. Even the humans at Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends were imaginary. The events that took place in Codename: Kids Next Door were just kids playing make believe. Phineas and Ferb exist only in Candace’s head. Ash Ketchum was just in a coma. Harry Potter dreamed Hogwarts because he couldn’t handle his abuse by the Dursleys. And on and on and on.

There seems to be a compulsion among young teens and adults to reclaim these shows for themselves, and for them, that means placing these stories within a tragic context that better fits their worldview, a paradigm in which optimistic stories centered around children could not possibly, believably exist in the real world. When these theories crop up, they go viral, usually with accompanying comments uttered in reverent tones along the lines of “I can never look at this show the same way again,” as if the theory has pulled back the curtain and revealed The Truth about an innocent show that many internet users enjoyed as children. In other words, the theory becomes more valid than the text or the show itself. We substitute the humor, the hope, and the ideology of children’s fiction with run-of-the-mill “it was all a dream” psychological horror, and by doing so, we throw a giant middle finger to the critically important messages these shows convey.

The whimsical tone of Rugrats centered around kids who never quite understood the adult world; they misconstrued words and events and spun their own ideas out of them, and it was a better world, simply because we as the audience were allowed to look at mundane adult things like taxes and car washes in fresh, ultrapositive ways. Phineas and Ferb is a joyously optimistic show about the power of invention and creativity, a world in which children are never asked to hold themselves back and are never cruel to one another. So many fantasy series allow us to find an essential truth of human experience, that hope and friendship and good will can overcome darkness, by showing us a world we can’t always see but is always there, just as Hogwarts is hidden from our Muggle eyes. These stories are equally as valid, if not more so, than our “adult” stories that show the world as a more brutal place. They can both be true, but stories only have the power that we assign to them. If we continue to insist that positive, hopeful stories are unbelievable, then we create a world in which those stories lose their power, and our world reflects that change.

The stories we tell children shape our future. There’s a reason we need those happy endings, and it’s not because children are too weak to handle the “truth” about the world. It’s because we as a society need to be reminded that kindness and hope have power. Children need stories that allow them to be heroes, that value their insight, their ideas, and their narratives. We need stories that empower, not stories that dwindle away into hopeless cynicism. We do not need to insist that fictional stories cannot exist on their own terms, that even fantasy worlds must be fantasies within their own story. It’s backwards, it’s hopeless, it’s wrong-headed. These stories aren’t yours to claim. They aren’t yours to “correct.” These stories belong to children, and thankfully, they’re stories full of more hope and power than anything the internet could ever come up with. Why would you ever try to tear them down?

I love this so much. And its super important, because I am guilty of this racism. All my characters I created, until I was maybe around 16 years old, were white. I’ve just turned 18.

I’m of Central American descent. You’d think I’d put some characters that looked like me in my stories. Even the ones with Japanese names early on in my closet weaboo phase werent Asian. I saw them as white.

It wasnt strictly intentional. I didnt set out to exclude POC. Having POC characters didnt “feel right”. And every time I read something on FictionPress where the protagonist wasn’t white i was uncomfortable.

Like only white characters had the privilege of being the stars of their own stories.

Thats fucked up of me and of this culture I grew up in that warped my mind to completely, like, not even contemplate the idea of a having a POC character. It’s shitty.

Now that I’m older, and more aware of the crap in my head and the crap being funneled in my mind I’m shoving back. Tumblr has helped so much on this, that even with the problems on this site, I’m forever grateful to the ideas and the people who helped open my mind. And I’m not just talking about purely social activist blogs, but art blogs, blogs of creators.

Now many of my OCs are people of color. And it’s not to tokenize them. I want more representation for POC, and as a creator it’s something I have to do.I want fantasy lands populated by peoples just as diverse as reality. Semi medieval worlds with a latina in knight’s armor. A black princess born to be a queen.

Media is important. Stories are important, just as the people who populate them are.

Representation is important.

If you haven’t read Deepa D’s “I Didn’t Dream of Dragons” or listened to Chimamanda Ngozi’s TED Talk “The Danger of a Single Story” I heartily reccomend them both; they’re both about the fact that POC authors often initially write white characters because we are not immune to the cultural message that stories are about white people. That we erase ourselves and our cultures and our lives, because we have only ever seen ourselves erased.
